Examiner Standardisation

RotorSky is the only flight school that offers, in cooperation with Austro Control, training to become a flight examiner. We offer courses for:

  • Flight Examiner (FE)
  • Type Rating Examiner (TRE)
  • Flight Instructor Examiner (FIE)

Requirements for all types of examiners

To start training to become a flight examiner, the following criteria has to be met:

The applicant has to have the required knowledge, background and experience regarding the rights of an examiner

The applicant has the prove, that in the last 3 years no sanctions, which include exposition, restriction or revocation or the license issued, have been charged due to violation of laws.

After checking of requirements and after application for the examiner license, the candidate is invited to a hearing at “Austro Control”. In this conversation the career and personal structure are being evaluated. An excerpt of criminal records has to be submitted.

Additional Requirements for Flight Examiners (FE)

Examiner for PPL/H require 1000 hours total time, including 250 hours as instructor. Examiner for CPL/H require 2000 hours total time and 250 hours as instructor as well.

The applicant has to hold a FI/H.

Additional Requirements for Flight Instructor Examiners (FIE)

Examiners for FI/H require 2000 hours total time and have to hold a FI/H. Additionally, 100 flight hours as instructor teaching flight instructor applicants have to be proven.

Additional Requirements for Type Rating Examiners (TRE)

Applicants for a TRE license have to hold a TRI license. If the applicant wants to examine on single engine and single pilot helicopters, a FI/H is a basic requirement.

For initial issuance of a TRE/H license, the applicant has to prove at least 50 hours as flight instructor on the type applicate

In case of helicopters with 2 pilots, the applicant has to hold a CPL/H ort ATPL/H and a total flight time of 1400 hours, of which 500 have to be as PIC.

In case of single engine helicopters with 1 pilot, the applicant has to prove a total time of 750 hours, of which 500 have to be as PIC.

Theoretical training at Austro Control

Theoretical training is being held at the national aviation authority “Austro Control”, the course takes about one day.

Practical training at RotorSky

Practical training consists of 4 flight lessons:

  1. Lesson: Normal procedures (about 40 minutes)
  2. Lesson: Emergency procedures (about 40 minutes)
  3. Lesson: Navigation and Cross Country flight (about 40 minutes)
  4. Lesson: Simulation of a complete exam (about 60 minutes)

The actual practical exam is being conducted by a senior examiner.

The flight lessons will be executed including the accordingly correct briefings. Every part of training for the exam is being lead by an experienced flight examiner. If possible, the lessons are simulated using another applicant as a “Dummy”.

If a positive suitability is determined, a theory course is being offered by the aviation authority. The duration depends on the type of course. For FE and FIE it takes about a day, for TRE a minimum of 3 days can be calculated with.
